Meet the Women Behind Aroi Mak Mak
Every restaurant has a story. Aroi Mak Mak's happens to involve two Filipinas, two very different journeys, and one beautiful island.
Meet Thess and Kay.
Thess was once a self-confessed city girl. After living in Thailand, she and her husband decided to take an adventure across the Philippines, exploring the country on a motorbike.
Their travels took them through different destinations until they eventually arrived in Siquijor. Somewhere between the island roads, tropical scenery, and slower pace of life, Thess discovered that perhaps being an island girl wasn't such a bad idea after all.
Today, she's the hands-on force behind Aroi Mak Mak's daily operations, making sure the restaurant runs smoothly and guests are well looked after.
Kay, on the other hand, was an island girl long before Siquijor entered the picture.
Having lived in Boracay and experienced life on different Philippine islands, Kay has always had a special connection with coastal living.
For her, island life wasn't something she needed to discover. It was already part of who she was.
Eventually, her journey brought her to Siquijor, where she found another island worth calling home.
As the heart working behind the scenes at Aroi Mak Mak, Kay brings her own experience, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit to the partnership.
One woman traded city life for island living. The other had island life in her blood.
Thess keeps the day-to-day operations moving, while Kay helps nurture the business behind the scenes. Together, their different strengths and shared vision have created something special on the shores of Siquijor.
And fortunately for the rest of us, that something involves delicious Thai food.
IslaMove Favorites: Two Thai Dishes Worth Discovering
Now, let's get to the delicious part.
With plenty of Thai flavors to explore, we've picked two dishes from Aroi Mak Mak's menu that deserve a little extra attention.
1. Massaman Beef Curry - Rich, Creamy, and Comforting

If you're a curry lover, this one should be on your list.
Massaman Beef Curry is a beloved Thai dish known for its rich, creamy sauce and beautifully balanced spices.
Aroi Mak Mak's version features beef, potatoes, and peanuts, brought together with aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves.
Unlike Thailand's more fiery curries, Massaman is generally milder, with subtle sweetness and deep, savory flavors.
It's hearty, fragrant, and practically begs to be paired with rice to soak up every last bit of sauce.
2. Khao Mun Gai - Thai Comfort Food at Its Finest

Sometimes the simplest dishes turn out to be the most satisfying.
Khao Mun Gai is Thailand's beloved take on chicken and rice, and Aroi Mak Mak gives this classic an especially appealing presentation.
Tender steamed chicken is arranged on a platter, topped with herbs and crispy garnishes, and served with rice and flavorful accompaniments.
It's a dish that doesn't need complicated ingredients to make an impression.
Comforting, satisfying, and beautifully presented, Khao Mun Gai is proof that simple food can still feel like something special.
Good Food, Good Stories, and Island Living
What makes Aroi Mak Mak worth discovering isn't just its Thai cuisine or beautiful beachfront setting.
It's also the story of the people who brought it to life.
Thess and Kay arrived in Siquijor from different places and with different experiences, but both found something worth staying for.
And together, they've created a restaurant that adds another delicious chapter to Siquijor's growing food scene.
